The European Commission has released a new and more ambitious EU Climate Adaptation Strategy on 24 February 2021. The launch of the new strategy was accompanied by a virtual event where experts and practitioners working on adaptation and disaster risk reduction discussed how to reach the goals of the Strategy and how to accelerate adaptation actions.
The new strategy paves the way for how the EU can adapt to the impacts of the climate crisis and become climate resilient by 2050. It is guided by the following principal objectives: to make adaptation smarter, swifter and more systematic, as well as to step up international action on climate change adaptation.
Adaptation is an issue that is spanning development cooperation, migration or security. Strengthening international collaboration for climate resilience is a key priority for the EU. Adaptation efforts need to be effectively targeted to reach the most exposed, vulnerable, conflict-prone or marginalised communities, leaving no one and no place behind.
RECEIPT’s project leader Bart van den Hurk was part of the session on ‘Stepping up international action for climate resilience’. Insights from RECEIPT and CASCADES set the stage for an in-depth discussion on how remote climate change impacts affect Europe’s resilience.
