It is difficult to imagine risks we haven’t faced before, even though people’s ability to imagining unprecedented events got changed in the last year. Visualisation tools, models and storylines are a method scientists use to imagine what has never happened before. Last November, the annual meeting Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty (DMDU) highlighted the importance of embracing and working with uncertainty.
Two RECEIPT scientists, Dr. Coulter and Prof. Suraje, took part in a DMDU 2020 session on ‘Adaptative planning and adaptative pathways’, where they presented RECEIPT’s work on the development of climate risk storylines. There, they illustrated how climate storylines and adaptation pathways are complimentary; from sea-level rise, to floods, storms or droughts, exploring potential climate risks allows scientists and decision makers to:
- link across temporal and spatial scales,
- help manage uncertainty and
- guide co-production of solutions.
